Conscious

Referring to ideas of which a person is aware.

One of four classes of explanatory knowledge, alongside Explicit, Inexplicit, and Unconscious ideas. Consciousness is awareness of one's own mental contents — but much of what a person knows operates below this threshold.

Connections

  • Contrasts with Unconscious — ideas the person is unaware of
  • Overlaps with Explicit — conscious ideas may or may not be expressible in words
  • Related to Inexplicit — some conscious knowledge resists articulation
  • Part of Idea classification — the taxonomy of mental contents
  • Subjective experience is the domain of conscious awareness
  • Personhood involves consciousness but is defined by explanatory universality
