Compromise

The mistaken attempt to solve a Problem by combining elements of two or more theories, rather than by testing the best version of at least one of them.

Compromise obscures which theory is superior. Instead of resolving a conflict through Criticism and Conjecture, it blends ideas in a way that prevents Error Correction.

Connections

  • Obstructs Error Correction — prevents identifying the better theory
  • Contrasts with genuine Criticism — which evaluates theories on their merits
  • A failure of Problem-solving methodology
  • Related to Conjecture — the proper approach is to conjecture a new solution, not merge bad ones
  • Can produce Stasis by preserving flawed ideas indefinitely
